Suffolk, VA
The city of Suffolk is the largest of the seven cities of Hampton Roads by land area and the largest independent city by area in the state of Virginia. Suffolk was founded in 1742 on the Nansemond River as a port town. Suffolk was originally surrounded by Nansemond County and became an independent city in 1906. In 1974, Suffolk combined with the former Nansemond County.
